Tips For Enjoying Your First Weekend or Multi-Day Sailing Charter

By Captain Andrew Seligman

You always thought sailing was exclusively for the wealthy, however you and your family ( or group of close friends) have decided to try a different type of weekend getaway instead of staying at the shore. You have booked your first sailing charter with a Licensed Captain for the weekend. You might be thinking to yourself “Now what do I do? What do we bring with us?” Not to worry. It is pretty simple and easy! First thing we suggest you do is speak with your Captain. So you now may be thinking—-”Speak to my Captain? Say what?” We here at Shardana Sailing Charters strive to make your experience with us private and personal; That is why we customize every charter for each of our clients. As soon as you book any multi-day or overnight charter we assign your own personal Captain. This Captain will contact at least several weeks before your charter to discuss where you may want to go, what you would like to see and do. After you have finished working with your captain itinerary planning, you will be able to figure out what to bring with you on your sailing charter.

Sailing is sort of like Glamping but Way More Luxurious!

Shardana Sailing Charters is sort of like renting a beach house at the shore except it’s alot more fun! Remember, Shardana Sailing Charters supplies Bed Linens, Towels, Sheets, and Blankets. All you need to bring are provisions (food), clothes, personal items, and an adventurous spirit.

Food (Provisions)

After speaking with your captain, you should have a good idea how many (if any) meals you will eat ashore; how much and what type of provisions you will bring aboard. Shardana has a full galley with plenty of storage space, large freezer and refrigerator. She has a microwave on board as well as BBQ grill. The best thing to do is to plan your meals out so you don’t have to worry about menus when on-board. Bring all the ingredients you need to make your meals in as small as possible packaging. Some guest like to pre-cook some of their meals so all they have to do is warm it up when they want to serve and eat. Space is more compact on a boat so when bringing items like milk and juice, it is best to purchase them in smaller containers—not one gallon jugs. When bringing drinks on-board, with the exception of wine or liquor, it is better to bring plastic bottles or cans (for both soft-drinks and beer). Generally speaking most guests prefer to eat breakfast and lunch on board (but not always). Dinners can be made on-board as well; Of course going to restaurants is always an option depending on where you have planned to go. Your Captain will assist you by showing you how to properly and safely use all the equipment on-board S/V Shardana.

Clothes and Personal Items

It is best to use soft luggage without wheels when packing for your trip. Soft luggage is easy to store. You want to have a minimum Shorts. short-sleeve shirt, a windbreaker that can double as a rain jacket, sunglasses, wide brimmed hat, sun block, a long pair of pants or skirt, a long sleeve shirt, and of course a swim suit. Bring personal toiletries and medications and motion sickness medication (if you think you are susceptible).. While not mandatory, the Captains appreciate being made aware of any guests medical conditions as precautionary measure. Please do not bring any CBD products or medical marijuana. While these substances may be legal in many States, Shardana is regulated by the United States Coast Guard and due to Federal Law is not allowed to have any CBD related substances on-board. You will not have to bring sheets, pillows blankets or bath towels with you as Shardana supplies all that for you and your guests.

A Flexible Fun Attitude

Life on the water is a very special and unique experience, If you are new to traveling on a boat, always have an open mind, and “take-life-as-it-comes” attitude. The expression “go where the wind take us” applies not only to the direction the boat is sailing but also to the attitude and enjoyment for everyone aboard. Remember, sailing can be an adventure with may beautiful unexpected surprises. We guarantee the memories of these special and once-in-a-lifetime moments will last forever.
