Springtime on Chesapeake Bay

Springtime is a wonderful time of year on the Chesapeake Bay .

As the weather warms up and the days get longer, the bay comes alive with new growth and activity. One of the most exciting things about spring on the bay is the return of migratory birds. The bay is a crucial stopover for birds traveling along the Atlantic Flyway, and visitors can spot a variety of species as they make their way north. From warblers and thrushes to waterfowl like ducks and geese, there is always something to see. Ospreys and Eagles make nests to raise their young. Of course the Great Blue Herons become more noticeable everywhere on the bay.

There have been a resurgence of otters living in the bay. There continues to be an increasing reports of people seeing these very playful animals

Another highlight of spring on Chesapeake Bay is the blooming of wildflowers and trees. Visitors can hike through the forests and marshes surrounding the bay to see the vibrant colors of flowers like trillium, bluebells, and azaleas. The bay's wetlands are also home to a variety of unique plants, like the carnivorous pitcher plant.

The water temperature in the bay starts to rise making it a perfect time for recreational activities like fishing for striped bass. Crabs start to become active so crabbing also begins this time of year.

Water activities such as kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding and sailing draw many to the water.

In addition to the natural beauty, spring also brings various events and festivals to the Chesapeake Bay area, such as the Annapolis Spring Sailboat Show, Chesapeake Bay Blues Festival and many spring sailing regattas.
